Tarim's Kela 2 Gas Field Hits Over 10 Billion Cubic Meters

The Kela 2 gas field, part of the Tarim Oilfield, has reached a remarkable production milestone, yielding over 10 billion cubic meters of natural gas. This achievement underscores the field's critical role in meeting China's growing energy demands.

As reported by China Media Group, the Kela 2-5 well has contributed significantly to this landmark achievement, becoming the seventh well in the Kela 2 gas field to surpass a cumulative output of 100 billion cubic meters. This accomplishment marks a pivotal moment in establishing China's largest cluster of high-yield wells, with each well producing over 10 billion cubic meters.

The Kela 2 gas field, located in the Tarim Basin of Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, is instrumental for the national west-east gas transmission project and is often referred to as its primary source. In light of surging gas demand, the Tarim Oilfield has harnessed advanced core production technologies, which effectively address the unique challenges posed by strong water-drive gas reservoirs.

Over the course of two decades, the Kela 2 gas field has consistently achieved stable production levels, maintaining an annual output of approximately 6 billion cubic meters for the past ten years. The cumulative natural gas production has now approached nearly 153 billion cubic meters.

In terms of operational efficiency, the gas field has leveraged automation technology to create a productive management model. The 33 gas wells in Kela 2 are overseen by only 32 technical and operational staff, translating to an average management ratio of one person per well, with each well producing approximately 860,000 cubic meters of gas daily.

To provide further context, a single well at Kela 2 can fulfill the daily gas requirements of more than 1.7 million households, assuming a typical consumption rate of 0.5 cubic meters per day for a three-person family. This impressive statistic highlights the effective production philosophy of 'one person, one well, one city' as highlighted by CMG.

As one of China's leading gas production regions, the Tarim Oilfield has surpassed a cumulative natural gas output of over 500 billion cubic meters, consistently achieving an annual production exceeding 31 billion cubic meters for six consecutive years. This output is vital for bolstering national energy security and advancing initiatives toward green and low-carbon development.

In the first quarter of 2026, the operational performance of Tarim Oilfield across its three primary sectors—crude oil, natural gas, and new energy—has been reported as smooth and effective. The field has supplied over 13.2 billion cubic meters of natural gas and generated 590 million kilowatt-hours of green electricity, with gas storage extraction significantly more than doubling when compared to the same period last year.

The Kela 2 gas field's impressive milestones and the Tarim Oilfield's overall achievements reinforce the significance of these natural resources in ensuring a secure and sustainable energy future for China.
