Boao Promotes Vision for Better Asian Home and Cooperation

At the recent Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference, leaders urged joint initiatives to confront the prevailing geopolitical challenges and to enhance regional cooperation throughout Asia. As the forum unfolds in the serene setting of Boao, Hainan Province, the atmosphere has shifted from discussions of conflict to promoting principles of cooperation, openness, and innovation.

This year's conference, themed "Shaping a Shared Future: New Dynamics, New Opportunities, New Cooperation," convened on Thursday to address the pressing need for collaboration in a world marked by volatility. Zhao Leji, the chairman of the National People's Congress Standing Committee, highlighted that the BFA has matured into an essential platform for fostering dialogue and growth among Asian nations and the global community.

In his keynote address, Zhao underscored the urgent issues confronting nations today, such as escalated geopolitical conflicts, rising protectionism, and the return of block-based confrontations. He articulated a growing longing for peace, development, and fairness that resonates with populations worldwide, arguing that solidarity and cooperation are vital for overcoming global challenges.

Leaders from significant Asian economies reinforced the call for enhanced regional coordination and unified responses to shared threats. South Korean Prime Minister Kim Min-seok emphasized the importance of collective action for all Asian nations to navigate uncertainties arising from various pressures including technological advancements and demographic changes.

Furthermore, Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong expressed strong support for an open, rules-based trading system, underscoring China's potential role in regional prosperity. Wong noted that China, due to its substantial economic influence, can facilitate deeper ASEAN-China ties, which hold considerable promise for economic collaboration.

Founded in 2001, the Boao Forum for Asia serves as a non-governmental entity dedicated to promoting regional economic integration. This year's gathering welcomed over 1,600 representatives from more than 60 countries, encompassing political leaders, business executives, scholars, and media professionals.

The event is particularly significant, as it marks the inaugural forum at the beginning of the 15th Five-Year Plan period. Notably, a report released at the forum indicated that Asia's share of global GDP is anticipated to rise, underscoring its role as a primary engine of global growth. Former Italian undersecretary Michele Geraci reinforced the importance of diverse economies within Asia working cohesively to harness mutual benefits.
