At the recent Boao Forum for Asia, leaders emphasized the crucial importance of Asian cooperation in stabilizing the global economy in light of rising protectionist sentiments. According to the 2026 Report on Sustainable Development of Asia and the World, Asia is poised to play a central role in driving global economic growth and is leading the transformation of the world economy. This assertion underlines the significance of collective efforts among Asian countries to uphold economic stability worldwide.

The proliferation of protectionism threatens to undermine established international rules and mutual trust. In this context, participants at the Boao Forum recognized that enhancing Asian regional cooperation is pivotal. Former Kyrgyz Prime Minister Djoomart Otorbaev highlighted the necessity of mutual trust in global governance. He stressed the urgency of exploring improved mechanisms for regional cooperation to address the complexities of today's geopolitical landscape.

In remarks regarding global trade challenges, Hungarian central bank deputy governor Dániel Palotai pointed to the importance of establishing relationships grounded in common interests and mutual trust to navigate issues such as tariffs and inflation.

China has proposed four global initiatives aimed at addressing worldwide crises, which were echoed by former Pakistani Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi. He articulated the country's commitment to fostering greater understanding among nations to achieve shared development.

The Boao Forum for Asia's 2026 Annual Report on Asia's Economic Outlook and Integration Process projects that the contribution of Asian economies to the global GDP will continue to rise, from 49.2% in 2025 to 49.7% in 2026, reinforcing the region's role as a primary driver of global growth.

Yose Rizal Damuri, executive director at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies in Indonesia, emphasized that Asia serves as a critical hub for global trade demand and commodity supply, cementing its position as a key player in the advancement of the global economy.
