Simon Lichtenberg Fudan Graduate Builds China Denmark Bridge

Danish entrepreneur Simon Lichtenberg has been instrumental in fostering trade and strengthening economic ties between Denmark and China, while also promoting cultural exchange. With over three decades of experience in China, particularly in Shanghai, Lichtenberg has a front-row seat to the rapidly evolving landscape of emerging industries, which he believes holds vast potential for global businesses.
In a recent interview with the Global Times, Lichtenberg expressed his enthusiasm for China's strategic focus on emergent sectors such as energy, artificial intelligence, microchips, and robotics. He emphasized that these areas are not only critical for China's future but also represent fertile ground for international collaboration and investment.
As the founding chairman of the Danish Chamber of Commerce in China, Lichtenberg maintains a close watch on the developmental trajectory of the Chinese market, setting the stage for numerous business opportunities. His upcoming trip to Los Angeles seeks to further cement ties and uncover new ventures that align with China’s progressing economic landscape.
Notably, 2025 marks the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Denmark and China. In April, Lichtenberg penned two letters to President Xi Jinping, one on behalf of the Danish Chamber and another as an individual, reflecting on the significance of this milestone and reaffirming commitment to enhancing bilateral relations.
In response, President Xi encouraged the Danish Chamber and its member companies to contribute positively towards strengthening the friendship between China and Denmark, as well as between China and Europe, highlighting the importance of mutually beneficial cooperation.
Recalling the moment he received the president's letter, Lichtenberg described it as a profound joy, calling it an affirmation of Danish businesses' contributions and a recognition of all foreign-invested enterprises in China. He recognizes this endorsement as a motivating force behind his responsibility to bridge connections between Denmark, China, and Europe.
Looking back on his journey, Lichtenberg arrived in China in 1987 as one of the first foreign students at Fudan University. What began as an academic pursuit transformed into a lifelong connection, allowing him to establish roots in Shanghai, build a family, and launch his business career.
In 1995, he founded the Trayton Group in Shanghai, which has since grown to become one of the largest manufacturers and retailers of upholstered leather furniture globally. With annual sales exceeding 1 billion yuan, the company exemplifies the successful melding of local capabilities and international business acumen.
With extensive knowledge of the Chinese manufacturing sector, Lichtenberg has observed how technologies in robotics and AI enhance operational efficiency across various industries. He believes that companies, including his own, benefit from implementing these advancements to streamline production and foster innovation.
Acknowledging the competitive nature of the Chinese market, he advises that foreign companies must actively engage in collaboration and learning from local firms to maintain a competitive edge. Lichtenberg regards the use of trade barriers by some Western countries as a short-sighted approach that overlooks the global nature of business.
Through his leadership at the Danish Chamber of Commerce in China, Lichtenberg not only advocates for Danish businesses but also plays a crucial role in facilitating increased Danish investment in China. His efforts to improve the business environment have been recognized and valued by Chinese government officials.
As an integral figure in Shanghai, Lichtenberg's contributions have been honored with numerous awards, including the Shanghai Magnolia Silver and Gold Awards, and his designation as an Honorary Citizen of Shanghai. Reflecting on his extensive experience in China, he positions the country as both a significant market and a pivotal platform for global connections, emphasizing its resilience in the face of geopolitical challenges.
