Young Workers Build Future Near Taiwan Straits This New Year

In the Xiamen-Kinmen waters off the coast of China's Fujian Province, the air is filled with the sounds of crashing waves and the distant rumble of machinery. This unique blend of nature and industry marks the spirit of the Spring Festival, where young workers are committed to enhancing infrastructure and connectivity in this vital region.
At the construction site of the Xiamen section of the Xiamen-Kinmen Bridge, project administration supervisor Peng Shizhou from China Communications Construction Company's Second Harbor Engineering Company, affectionately known as Xiao Peng, showcases the impressive structures around him. He points to the east-west main tower of the bridge, which was capped just before the end of last year.
The initiative to develop Fujian Province as a demonstration zone for the integrated development across the Taiwan Straits was formalized in a 2023 circular issued by the CPC Central Committee and the State Council. This plan aims to facilitate infrastructure development between Xiamen and Kinmen, including essential services such as electricity and gas supply, and the construction of bridges that ought to foster closer connections.
Peng details the advanced methods being used in the bridge's construction. "We are utilizing an unreinforced steel-shell concrete composite structure, which lessens the need for rebar and enhances overall efficiency," he describes. Furthermore, he emphasizes the environmental benefits of prefabricated construction, noting that it minimizes disturbance to the marine ecosystem.
As he guides reporters through the site, Peng reflects on his relatively brief career in bridge construction. Having started just after graduating in 2024, he views this project as both a professional milestone and a personal passion, capturing the evolution of the bridge through photography.
After riding the construction elevator up the west main tower, the team gets a closer look at the intricate work involved. They meet with tower crane operator Liu Guozheng, who has been diligently working at the site, emphasizing the complexities involved in lifting the massive steel shells, which each weigh up to 155 tons.
These steel shells are crucial components of the bridge, requiring precise handling to ensure safety and structural integrity. Liu explains the challenges he faces with the increasing height bringing stronger winds and tighter tolerances, affirming that each hoisting operation demands a combination of skill and nerves.
Despite the festive occasion, the bridge builders are dedicated to meeting their construction deadlines. Peng shares updates on their recent achievements and expresses his commitment to capturing the spirit of camaraderie among coworkers during this busy time. "I won’t go home this Spring Festival," he states, reflecting on both duty and passion.
As night approaches, the workers take a moment atop the bridge tower to reflect on their progress. The strait, once viewed as a vast barrier, now feels transformed, symbolizing the closer ties and shared aspirations forged through their labor.
