China Encourages Electric Vehicle Price Deals with EU After Volkswagen

China's Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) is expressing optimism regarding collaborations between Chinese electric vehicle (EV) brands and the European Union (EU) following a recent tariff exemption granted to Volkswagen for its SUV manufactured in China.

In response to inquiries about supporting individual discussions between Chinese EV manufacturers and the EU, MOFCOM spokesperson He Yadong indicated that the ministry is hopeful that more Chinese EV companies will establish price commitment agreements with the EU.

This comes on the heels of a series of consultations that led to what has been described as a 'soft landing' in the electric vehicle trade dispute, aligned with global trade regulations under the World Trade Organization. This outcome has been positively received by international stakeholders and industry representatives alike.

The consensus reached through these negotiations sees both parties endorsing the effective use of price commitments by Chinese EV manufacturers. Furthermore, an EU guidance document has been issued, which commits to conducting assessments in a manner that is objective and free from discrimination.

He Yong noted the strong integration and mutual benefits of the automotive sectors in China and the EU, urging the European Union to properly follow through on the essential understandings established by leaders from both regions and to actualize the results of the discussions.

Looking ahead, the Chinese side is eager to engage in further dialogue with the EU to foster an open and stable market environment that will be advantageous for industrial growth on both sides.

MOFCOM's proactive stance on encouraging negotiations points to China's broader strategy to position its EV industry favorably within international markets, ensuring that both domestic and global economic dynamics continue to evolve in a collaborative manner.
