Taiwan Officials' Tariff Talks with US Sacrifice Local Interests

Taiwan's economic landscape faces scrutiny as officials criticize the Democratic Progressive Party's recent tariff negotiations with the United States, claiming these discussions could jeopardize local industries and the overall economy.

In a recent statement, Chen Binhua, a spokesperson for the Taiwan Work Office of the CPC Central Committee and Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, addressed rising concerns among the Taiwanese public regarding potential concessions to the US. He highlighted fears particularly surrounding the beef, poultry, pork, and automotive sectors.

Chen contended that the DPP's attempts to curry favor with the US come at the cost of Taiwan's economic stability. He argued that the DPP has demonstrated neither the willingness nor the ability to protect the island's economic interests or its populace.

Moreover, Chen warned that the appreciation of the new Taiwan dollar could significantly impact exports, further stressing the economy. Coupled with tariff pressures, he cautioned that Taiwan may become inundated with foreign goods and capital, leading to detrimental effects on local industries and food safety.

The spokesperson emphasized that the DPP’s facilitation of what he described as one-sided demands from the US signifies a troubling trend where Taiwan's interests are being sacrificed for the sake of political gain.

The continuation of such policies, according to Chen, could undermine the foundations of Taiwan’s economic health and well-being, raising the stakes for local businesses and consumers alike.
