Authorities in the Gongchangling District of Liaoyang City, situated in Northeast China's Liaoning Province, are currently investigating a ritual that reportedly involves the burial of a car as part of a sacrificial practice. This inquiry has been initiated following concerns that such actions may violate local laws and regulations.

On Friday, the district government issued a formal notice regarding the situation, emphasizing its serious approach to the matter in light of the potential legal infringements involved. The specific brand of the car involved in the burial has not been disclosed in the official communication.

This investigation was prompted by a video that circulated on the Chinese social media platform Sina Weibo, igniting public discourse on the topic. The footage depicted a funeral service taking place in Liaoyang, where a Mercedes-Benz S450L, identifiable by its unique license plate, was reportedly interred as a grave good, according to a report by Chang'anjie Zhishi, an account linked to the Beijing Daily.

The notice from local officials highlighted that the investigation was triggered by observations of various sacrificial practices in Wazigou village, including the replacement of tombstones and the burial of a vehicle. An immediate response from the district's media platform, Gongchangling1027, confirmed that action would be taken concerning these practices.

Initial investigations suggest that an individual surnamed Jin was responsible for the illegal burial of the car, motivated by superstitious beliefs. Upon receiving feedback from government entities, Jin has taken responsibility for the actions and is cooperating with authorities in their rectification efforts.

The Gongchangling district government stated that given the potential legal violations, they are handling the case with the utmost seriousness and adherence to the law. Upcoming actions will focus on reviewing and addressing illegal practices within the funeral and burial sector throughout the region.
