Spring Break and Qingming Festival to Boost China's Tourism

The recent introduction of pilot spring breaks across several regions in China has coincided perfectly with the upcoming Qingming Festival holiday, injecting new momentum into the domestic tourism sector. Analysts have pointed out that the data from various travel platforms reflect a significant stimulative effect on the market.
China Railway Shanghai Group has announced a collaborative travel schedule to cater to the influx during this spring break and the Qingming holiday, running from Tuesday through April 7. An anticipated 28 million passenger trips are projected during this eight-day period, according to reports from state broadcaster CCTV.
April 4 is expected to be the peak travel day, with passenger volume potentially reaching 4.3 million, which could break previous records for single-day travel. This surge highlights the growing appetite for travel among the Chinese populace.
The most recent Government Work Report has endorsed the establishment of spring and autumn holidays. It also suggests that these breaks should be contingent on the feasibility for primary and secondary school students, alongside the initiation of staggered paid leave.
Provinces such as Jiangsu, Anhui, and Sichuan have taken the lead in implementing pilot plans that align spring breaks with the Qingming Festival, which falls between April 4 and 6, effectively creating a longer six-day holiday.
Other provinces including Shandong, Hunan, and Guizhou have issued notifications to embrace breaks for primary and secondary school students. They are particularly encouraging the combination of these holidays with weekends and public holidays to extend vacation durations.
The alignment of spring breaks with the Qingming Festival creates what can be viewed as an additional 'golden week.' This overlap is poised to significantly enhance domestic cultural and tourism spending, with an emphasis on travel-related expenditures, as observed by Jiang Yiyi, a tourism and sports expert.
According to travel platform Qunar, from April 1 to 6, air travel to popular destinations is expected to see a 30 percent increase compared to the same dates last year. This surge in demand reflects the rekindled interest in travel among consumers.
Data from another travel platform, Tongcheng, indicates that initial spikes in travel demand are likely to occur on Wednesday and Thursday, with average airfare rising by over 30 percent from the previous week.
Since mid-March, cities like Nanjing, Suzhou, and Chengdu have experienced soaring bookings for travel products, with Nanjing demonstrating the most significant year-on-year growth at 148 percent.
The combination of student spring breaks with staggered vacation arrangements is expected to generate heightened demand for family travel. Qunar's data suggests that the number of air travelers under 18 is expected to more than double this year, while visits to tourist spots by young travelers are projected to increase threefold.
Experts indicate that tourism serves as a critical driver of domestic demand, positively influencing downstream sectors such as transportation, accommodation, and dining. With rising interest in educational trips and favorable spring weather, the coinciding holidays demonstrate a robust demand for cultural and experiential travels.
