Chinese Automakers Surpass Japan in Global Sales for First Time

Chinese automakers have made history by surpassing Japanese manufacturers in global vehicle sales for the first time, signaling a major transformation within the automotive industry.
According to a recent report by Nikkei, the total global sales of Japanese automakers declined slightly to around 25 million units in 2025, resulting in Japan relinquishing its longstanding top position first established in 2000.
In stark contrast, Chinese car manufacturers achieved nearly 27 million units in global sales last year, ultimately securing the premier spot worldwide.
This conclusion is based on information released by prominent automakers and comprehensive research conducted by the automotive data platform MarkLines, as referenced by Nikkei.
Among the individual companies, BYD has outperformed Ford, rising to the sixth position globally in 2025, while Geely has surpassed Honda, claiming the eighth spot.
Six Chinese automakers have successfully entered the global top 20 rankings, including notable names such as Chery, Changan Automobile, SAIC Motor, and Great Wall Motors, whereas Japan has five companies represented.
In the rapidly evolving electric vehicle market, BYD has notably surpassed Tesla to become the world's leading seller of electric vehicles.
Tang Jin, a prominent researcher at Japan's Mizuho Bank and a specialist in the automotive field, emphasized that China's rise to the forefront signifies more than just a numerical shift.
It reflects a transformative reconfiguration within the global automotive landscape, driven by China's strengths in advanced technology, cost efficiency, and rapid research and development.
He further articulated that Japan must reconsider its strategies regarding vehicle electrification and its positioning in the global market in light of this intensifying competition.
