Beijing 2026 Humanoid Robot Half-Marathon to Feature 300 Robots

The 2026 Yizhuang humanoid robot half-marathon in Beijing is poised to feature over 300 humanoid robots, highlighting significant advancements in the field of robotics and the commercialization of such technologies. Scheduled for April 19, the event signals a remarkable evolution in China's humanoid robotics sector as it transitions from research laboratories into practical applications.
This upcoming race marks the second edition of the event, building on the success of the inaugural marathon held the previous year. As of March 10, more than 76 entities from 13 provincial-level regions, along with over 100 competing teams, have registered to participate, showcasing an impressive increase in engagement.
Of the registered teams, more than 80 are corporate participants, accompanied by over 20 teams from universities and training camps. According to Liu Weiliang, the deputy director-general and spokesperson for the Beijing Bureau of Economy and Information Technology, 26 robot brands will be represented among the participating humanoid robots.
Organizers have reported that this year's half-marathon will see a substantial increase in scale, number of participants, and technical prowess. The participating teams have nearly quintupled since the first iteration of the event, with geographic representation growing from five to thirteen provinces.
The event has seen a remarkable upsurge in academic participation, with 20 universities registered—ten times the number from last year. This growth has fostered deeper integration between industry, education, and research, exemplified through collaborative initiatives, such as joint laboratories and training camps.
For the first time, the competition will feature a dedicated category for autonomous navigation, making up 38 percent of the teams, alongside a group focused on remote control. To encourage development in autonomous capabilities, the net times for remote-controlled teams will be adjusted using a coefficient to level the competitive field.
Set to coincide with the half-marathon, the 2026 Beijing E-Town marathon will have humanoid robots following the same routes as their human counterparts. Robots competing must be over 75 centimeters tall and complete the entire distance of 21.0975 kilometers continuously.
To ensure precision in the competition, each robot will be equipped with a BeiDou Navigation Satellite System shoulder badge, permitting centimeter-level positioning accuracy and real-time tracking. The event will only permit certified power batteries, with expert assessments planned to guarantee compliance and fairness.
In addition to the half-marathon race, a new sub-event called the Robot 'Baturu' Challenge will be introduced, consisting of 17 obstacle events tailored to test the robots' stability and agility while navigating complex, simulated scenarios, including disaster conditions.
Yizhuang, also known as E-Town, has established itself as a prominent hub for robotics and smart manufacturing in China, currently hosting over 300 companies in this field. The regional robotics industry is valued at more than 10 billion yuan, underscoring its significance in contributing to Beijing's overall robotics production.
The forthcoming event represents a robust display of the vitality within China's robotics industry, according to Wang Peng, an associate research fellow at the Beijing Academy of Social Sciences. It illustrates a shift from traditional human-led operations to fully autonomous robots and signifies a move towards consolidated and collaborative efforts across the robotics industry spectrum.
Reflecting the maturation of the domestic humanoid-robot hardware engineering sector, the competition's standards mandate that robots possess a complete torso and bipedal structure, indicating advances towards a unified and performance-driven design framework. This shift reinforces the resilience and vitality of China's robotics industry and supply chain, a development emphasized by a report stating that over 80 percent of the world's humanoid robot installations in 2025 occurred in China.
