Chinese Foreign Minister warns tariffs and decoupling may backfire

China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi recently warned that the rising trend of tariff imposition and supply chain decoupling could lead to counterproductive outcomes. During a press conference held alongside the fourth session of the 14th National People's Congress, Wang emphasized the pressing need for global collaboration and trade stability amidst ongoing economic challenges.
Wang addressed concerns about protectionism during the briefing, responding to a question about China's strategy to counteract deglobalization. He highlighted the imperative of sharing development opportunities with the world to foster stable growth in the global economy.
In his remarks, Wang conveyed a powerful metaphor articulated by Chinese President Xi Jinping, noting that isolating economies is as impractical as attempting to redirect oceans into isolated lakes. He cautioned that pursuing such protectionist policies would ultimately confine nations to a 'dark room,' shielding them from external adverse conditions but simultaneously restricting access to vital light and air.
Further reinforcing China's commitment to international cooperation, Wang declared that a major nation must contribute positively to global welfare. He reiterated that moving forward, China intends to broaden its openness to the international community, fulfilling its responsibilities as the 'workshop of the world' while also enhancing its status as the 'global market.'
Wang’s comments come at a time when the global economic landscape is shifting due to rising nationalism and trade barriers. His statements reflect a broader vision for a more interconnected global economy, where cooperation trumps isolation, and collective growth supersedes unilateral measures.
