Humanoid Robots Expand Their Reach Beyond Spectacles

China's humanoid robot development is experiencing a significant surge, marked by advancements in artificial intelligence and an increasing integration into various industries. This trend is not merely a spectacle but reflects a broader ambition to improve efficiency and productivity in real-world applications.
At a robot training institution in Shandong Province, a multitude of humanoid robots are engaged in activities that mimic the tasks of human engineers. These robots are learning to carry trays, fold clothes, and retrieve items, equipping them for practical job roles in diverse settings.
"Our ultimate goal is to enable them to perceive and adapt to environments like humans," explains Su Kairui, head of the Leju humanoid robot data training center. The center encompasses 11 application scenarios ranging from logistics in factories to providing assistance in home care environments.
Humanoid robots captured public attention during the latest Spring Festival Gala, showcasing their prowess through elaborate martial arts and gymnastic performances. Unitree Robotics, a pivotal player in this domain, demonstrated the capabilities of these robots, attracting notable visitors including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
Industry players suggest that these performances highlight the significant technological progress made in the humanoid robotics sector, paving the way for broader practical applications. In a statement, Unitree Robotics noted that many technical challenges have been overcome to achieve such performances.
These advancements extend beyond entertainment, with applications such as algorithms for robotic coordination in stage performances being adaptable to real-time scheduling tasks in warehouse settings. Similarly, the robots' ability to cope with external disturbances is crucial for ensuring safe operations across various operational environments.
The robotics industry is in a pivotal phase, rapidly transitioning innovations into real-world applications. Training centers are emerging in provinces like Anhui, Zhejiang, and Shandong, and several humanoid robot companies are reporting commercial orders.
"The industry is at a critical stage of technological breakthroughs and expanding applications," states Li Dezheng, general manager of Xingjie Innovation Robotics. This company has begun deploying humanoid robots in industries such as chemical manufacturing, data centers, and retail.
There has been a remarkable rise in orders from corporate clients, with government purchases comprising around 20 percent and enterprise orders making up 70 percent. This reflects a growing recognition of the need for robots to enhance operational efficiency and relieve repetitive labor burdens.
Guo Jishun, a general manager at Gelanruo, highlights that sectors such as intelligent manufacturing, smart warehousing, and emotional companionship represent the forefront of humanoid robot applications. He emphasizes that the current surge is driven by advanced AI capabilities and powerful computing chips.
China is intensifying efforts to nurture future industries tied to embodied AI, aligning with the recommendations for the 15th Five-Year Plan. With over 140 humanoid robot manufacturers and significant patent registrations, China is positioning itself as a leader in the global industrial robotics landscape.
Experts contend that while the humanoid robot industry is still in its infancy, public demonstrations and government backing are vital for accelerating the pace of application adoption. Initiatives from the government aim to harmonize supply and demand, propelling this technology toward practical integration in everyday life.
