China Unveils National Standards for Humanoid Robotics and AI

China has announced a comprehensive set of national standards for humanoid robotics and artificial intelligence, designed to enhance specifications and safety protocols within the sector. This initiative aims to facilitate greater integration and foster innovation across the rapidly evolving technology landscape.

The new standard system was revealed during the annual meeting of the Humanoid Robots and Embodied Intelligence Standardization (HEIS) held in Beijing. It includes six essential components: basic commonality, brain-like and intelligent computing, limbs and components, complete machines and systems, application, along with safety and ethics.

The development of these standards was a collaborative effort involving over 120 research institutions, enterprises, and industry practitioners, under the guidance of the technical committee for the Higher Education Information System (HEIS), which operates under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

Specifically, the standards for brain-like and intelligent computing detail the necessary specifications for the 'brain and cerebellum' components of embodied intelligence, focusing on the entire data lifecycle, including model training and deployment processes.

Application standards are designed to regulate the development, operation, and maintenance of humanoid robots across various use cases, while the safety and ethics standards aim to ensure compliance throughout the industrial lifecycle as technology progresses.

These standards emerge against the backdrop of significant growth in China's humanoid robot industry, particularly during 2025, which has been supported by mid- to long-term strategies from both national and local governments, positioning this industry as a critical strategic sector.

The past year has been heralded as a pivotal moment for mass production in China's humanoid robotics field, with more than 140 domestic manufacturers unveiling over 330 different models, according to data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

The introduction of this new standard system is expected to provide vital guidance to the burgeoning humanoid robotics industry, facilitating high-quality development through adherence to standardized technical specifications and safety guidelines.
