China Adjusts Anti-Discrimination Measures Halts Tariffs on Canadian Imports

China's Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) has announced an adjustment to its anti-discrimination measures concerning certain Canadian imports. Effective from March 1, 2026, to December 31, 2026, the planned measures come after a recent announcement from Canada about partial adjustments to its own tariffs.

This decision is part of a broader effort to enhance bilateral trade relations between China and Canada. Specifically, the adjustments are aimed at addressing economic challenges in key sectors including electric vehicles, steel, and aluminum, among others.

In September 2024, MOFCOM launched an anti-discrimination investigation into Canada's restrictive measures against Chinese imports. The investigation culminated in a ruling on March 8, 2025, which led to the imposition of additional tariffs against Canadian products.

Recent developments indicate that the Canadian government has begun to ease some of the restrictive tariffs it had placed on imports of steel and aluminum from China. The initiative reflects ongoing diplomatic efforts to resolve trade disputes between the two nations.

The proposed tariff suspensions from China are contingent on Canada’s continued commitment to adjusting its own tariffs. MOFCOM's spokesperson confirmed that the cessation of tariffs on selected Canadian goods will facilitate improved trade relations.

"China is eager to collaborate with Canada, based on the strong consensus between their leaders, to promote healthy, stable, and sustainable economic and trade relations," the MOFCOM spokesperson remarked, highlighting the importance of mutual cooperation.
