Merz's Delegation Highlights Germany's Commitment to Relations

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is set to lead a high-level economic and trade delegation to China, accompanied by executives from approximately 30 prominent German companies. The delegation will focus on sectors such as automotive, chemical, biopharmaceutical, machinery manufacturing, and the circular economy, signaling Germany's robust commitment to enhancing bilateral economic ties.
A spokesperson from the Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) emphasized China's priority on economic and trade cooperation with Germany. The two nations are collaborating to organize significant events, including a meeting of the China-Germany Economic Advisory Committee. This aims to establish platforms for dialogue that will guide businesses towards joint cooperation.
The spokesperson's comments come amidst inquiries about the intended economic and trade activities during Chancellor Merz's visit to China, scheduled from Wednesday to Thursday. This visit reflects not only current dynamics but also the future potential of economic and trade relations between the two countries.
Since the establishment of diplomatic relations over 50 years ago, economic and trade cooperation between China and Germany has consistently deepened. Germany has been China's largest trading partner and a leading source of foreign investment from Europe. The integration of their industries has strengthened cooperation, as evidenced by the trade remaining above $200 billion in recent years.
The investment flow between the two countries has also been significant, with the stock of bilateral investment surpassing $65 billion, representing about one quarter of China's total trade with the European Union.
In light of this year marking the commencement of China's 15th Five-Year Plan, the MOFCOM spokesperson welcomed German companies to seize new opportunities presented by China's heightened openness to international markets. This includes consolidating traditional cooperation and exploring new prospects in emerging areas such as clean energy and industrial digitalization.
MOFCOM expressed a readiness to work alongside Germany to foster mutual understanding and trust through open communication. The emphasis remains on supporting free trade and reinforcing the multilateral trading system based on established rules.
Such collaborative efforts aim to promote a high-quality development of economic and trade cooperation between China and Germany. The ministry posited that this partnership serves as both a stabilizing force and a catalyst for improving relations between China and Germany, as well as between China and the broader European Union.
As the discussions unfold, the world will be watching to see how effectively these two economic powerhouses translate their cooperative talks into tangible results, shaping the future landscape of international relations.
The commitment to deepen trade ties comes at a time when global economic dynamics are shifting, underlining the importance of such high-level engagements in maintaining robust international relationships.
