Sports Economy Thrives with Upcoming 15th National Games

The 15th National Games, which officially commenced on Sunday, signify a historic moment as it is the first time China's significant national sports event is co-hosted by multiple regions, including Guangdong Province, and the Hong Kong and Macao Special Administrative Regions.
As an influential event in the sporting calendar, experts assert that the National Games will not only generate substantial economic returns for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area but also exemplify the achievements in regional integration, laying a robust groundwork for future growth.
Renowned equipment manufacturer TaiShan Sports, based in Shandong Province, is making its tenth appearance at the National Games, offering tailored services and support for over ten sports disciplines such as artistic and rhythmic gymnastics, martial arts, wrestling, track cycling, baseball, and softball.
A representative from TaiShan Sports emphasized the importance of the National Games as China's leading comprehensive sports event, providing a vital platform for showcasing high-quality sports equipment and professional service expertise.
In a notable surge, searches related to the National Games, including accommodations and travel options, have spiked nearly 400 percent, according to Tongcheng Travel. Specifically, search interest in cities such as Guangzhou and Shenzhen has risen over 40 percent, reflecting increased travel curiosity among visitors.
Guangzhou, serving as the host city for the opening ceremony, has rolled out numerous cultural, tourism, and sports initiatives aimed at benefiting the public. The city has introduced 50 themed travel routes linking competition venues with local cultural and tourism attractions, alongside ticket discounts and promotional offers.
Following the kickoff of the winter season consumption campaign in Guangdong, a variety of attractions are providing generous access incentives during the National Games. Over 260 state-owned A-level scenic spots and nearly 40 popular tourist destinations are offering complimentary entry for athletes and staff, while many others are extending discounts to spectators.
With an estimated five million tickets available for the National Games, many come with bundled packages that include free or discounted admission to local attractions, accommodations, public transportation, and shopping vouchers, enhancing the overall experience for attendees.
CGZL, the official ticketing partner for the Games, reported that since early November, it has seen a steady stream of group bookings for major events, with nearly 40 percent of its travelers coming from outside Guangdong Province, typically planning itineraries lasting four to seven days.
The rise of the 'sports event economy' has been recognized as an emerging catalyst for domestic consumption, building on the momentum from grassroots tournaments. Experts note that large-scale sports events not only drive infrastructure investments but also cultivate a dynamic sports culture.
Jiang Yiyi, a tourism and sports expert, pointed out that the vibrant sports atmosphere surrounding the National Games will benefit the broader industry chain, from training facilities to related equipment, while also underpinning Guangdong's strengths as a hub for sports manufacturing.
The current National Games uniquely incorporate the Hong Kong and Macao regions as co-hosts, establishing a novel model for customs clearance aimed at facilitating the cross-border movement of individuals and materials. This year also marks the introduction of cross-border competitions, highlighting the interconnectedness of the Greater Bay Area.
