WCIF Emerges as a ‘Shining Brand’ for Western China’s Growth

The 20th Western China International Fair (WCIF), currently taking place in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, from Sunday to Thursday, has emerged as a significant platform for promoting trade, investment, and economic cooperation in China’s western regions. According to Mao Ning, a spokesperson for China's Foreign Ministry, the fair has become a "shining brand" representing the growth and development potential of western China to an international audience.
Under the theme "Deepen Reform for More Momentum, Expand Openness for Greater Growth," this year's WCIF attracts more than 3,000 companies from 62 countries and regions, highlighting China's commitment to opening up its economy. Mao underscored the fair's role as a vital window that facilitates important trade and investment opportunities, emphasizing China's willingness to enhance understanding and cooperation with other nations.
At the fair, numerous cutting-edge technologies and innovative products are on display, indicating the direction of future industrial development. From lithium iron phosphate 4C superfast-charging batteries to the latest advancements in carbon fiber technology used in Airbus A350 wings, the exhibition showcases the capabilities of China’s burgeoning tech industry. Furthermore, the introduction of the new-generation artificial sun, "Huanliu-3," exemplifies China's ambitions in pioneering renewable energy sources.
The WCIF is not only a platform for domestic exhibitors but also an essential venue for foreign businesses seeking to establish or expand their presence in the region. Alberto Borini, CEO of B·Plan Tech from Italy, expressed the unprecedented opportunities his company has found in Chengdu since its establishment in 2019, as it prepares for mass production of consumer electronic devices by late 2025.
Borini attributed the success of foreign investments in China's western regions to various factors, including government support, a favorable business climate, and a complete supply chain ecosystem. He highlighted emerging sectors for investment such as high-tech industries, electric vehicles, environmental technology, and agriculture, indicating a diverse landscape ripe for exploration.
Italian businessman Piercarlo Ravasio expressed his belief that China is well-positioned to become the world's leading economic power within the next decade, given its technological capabilities, vast consumer base, and expertise. He views his participation in the WCIF as a strategic move to harness further cooperation opportunities.
Cong Yi, a professor at the Tianjin School of Administration, remarked that the WCIF symbolizes China's ongoing commitment to opening up its economy amid global challenges like unilateralism and protectionism. He noted how such international events signal China's determination to support the multilateral trading system and respond responsibly as a major global power.
The fair also highlights the technological and innovative advancements in China's western regions, aligned with the national strategy for large-scale regional development. The Chongqing Pavilion, for example, presents a new ambition to create a "new-energy and intelligent connected vehicle industry cluster," while Inner Mongolia showcases models highlighting its achievements in aerospace and renewable energy.
