China's NDRC Acts to Secure Summer Electricity Supply

China's National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) has announced its commitment to securing a stable electricity supply this summer as the nation prepares for a significant rise in demand from June to August, which is traditionally the peak consumption period.
NDRC officials have assured the public that despite the anticipated increase in maximum electricity load, comprehensive strategies are in place to maintain a balanced power supply and prevent shortages, thereby ensuring energy security across the country.
According to Li Chao, an NDRC official, the expected maximum electricity load during the summer months is projected to increase by approximately 100 million kilowatts compared to the previous year.
In order to accommodate the rising demand, the NDRC has put forward a variety of policy measures. These include enhancing power generation capacity and fortifying cross-provincial power transmission infrastructure, as well as optimizing energy supply plans to ensure that electricity from the northwestern regions can effectively support densely populated and industrial areas along the eastern coast.
As of the end of May, China has reached a cumulative installed electricity generation capacity of 3.61 billion kilowatts, marking an 18.8 percent increase year-on-year. Additionally, coal inventories at major power plants remain robust, contributing to the overall stability of the supply.
Currently, all sectors are actively working to respond to the anticipated power loads during peak summer heat waves. The balance of power supply and demand this summer is reportedly more favorable than last year, with overall energy security being maintained across the nation.
To address possible regional power constraints during peak hours and to prepare for extreme weather events, the NDRC plans to enhance monitoring through a daily reporting mechanism. This will include strict enforcement of contracts related to coal, oil, and gas supplies, as well as ongoing coordination of production, transportation, and reserves.
Furthermore, in response to emergencies, the NDRC has stated that resources will be pre-positioned to ensure electricity supply to residential areas and critical industrial sectors, thereby reinforcing the preparedness of the energy infrastructure.
