Culture-Driven Innovation Fuels Growth of China’s Giant NEV Manufacturer

SHENZHEN, May 22 (Xinhua) -- In south China's Shenzhen, crowds frequently gather at the headquarters of BYD Company Limited, recognized globally as the world's leading new energy vehicle (NEV) manufacturer in 2024. The company not only showcases its impressive lineup of electric vehicles but also offers visitors insights into its unique cultural identity.
Many of BYD's car models are infused with traditional Chinese elements, a nod to the country’s rich heritage. Models such as "Han" and "Tang" draw inspiration from two of China’s illustrious ancient dynasties, and one of their sub-brand logos even reflects the ancient oracle bone script character for "electricity." This integration of culture into modern technology underscores a commitment to preserving Chinese identity.
A BYD representative emphasized that these cultural features remain unchanged even when selling internationally. He indicated that foreign buyers also appreciate these characteristics, recognizing the charm inherent in Eastern civilization. This strategy highlights BYD's confidence in its cultural origins while appealing to global markets.
Founded in 1994, BYD marked a significant achievement in 2022 when its operating revenue surpassed 10 billion yuan, approximately 1.39 billion U.S. dollars. The company solidified its market position by selling over 4.27 million NEVs last year, showcasing its rapid growth and consumer acceptance.
An unwavering belief in the necessity of green energy underpins BYD’s mission, as articulated by its chairman and echoed by employees. This philosophy aligns seamlessly with China’s broader ethos of achieving harmony between humanity and nature, emphasizing the company’s commitment to addressing global ecological challenges.
During a visit to the headquarters, one guest remarked on the importance of family dynamics in Chinese culture, noting that it’s common for several generations to live together. The design of BYD’s newly launched business vehicles takes this into account, allowing elderly family members to comfortably sit in the back, thus resonating with traditional Chinese family values.
BYD is distinguished by its 'engineer culture,' which focuses on practical problem-solving rooted in real-world scenarios. This culture fosters engagement and collaboration across various societal segments, enabling the company to draw inspiration from diverse sources and challenges.
Chairman Wang Chuanfu, who is also an engineer, has conceived a new energy-based rail system dubbed "SkyShuttle" to reduce urban traffic congestion. This innovative project offers a more cost-effective solution compared to traditional subway systems and is already operational in several cities.
With over 120,000 personnel dedicated to research and development and a portfolio boasting more than 59,000 patent applications, BYD has firmly established itself as a leader of technology within the NEV sector. The new generation of its independently developed "blade battery" promises a remarkable driving range of 1,000 kilometers while also ensuring robust fire resistance.
In a unique initiative, BYD previously invited eleven Chinese science fiction writers to its headquarters to collaborate with engineers. The outcome of this creative convergence is a collection of sci-fi short stories titled "The Dream Builders," which was published earlier this month and explores visionary prospects for the future of transportation.
Sci-fi author Wanxiangfengnian articulated the connection between engineering and invention, expressing the excitement of experiencing the transformative energy harnessed at BYD. Ji Shaoting, head of the Future Affairs Administration, highlighted the vibrancy and determination of BYD’s youthful team, noting that their commitment is key to the success of China's smart manufacturing landscape.
