US to Levy 35 Percent Tariff on Canada Reports Say

The United States is set to impose a significant 35 percent tariff on imports from Canada, a move that has raised serious concerns around possible retaliatory actions and escalated calls for diplomatic negotiations to fend off the risk of a potential trade war.
According to recent reports, President Donald Trump announced this new tariff will take effect on August 1. In conjunction with this, he also indicated intentions to impose blanket tariffs of 15 percent or 20 percent on many other trading partners.
During discussions with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Trump explicitly cautioned that the tariff rate on Canadian goods could be adjusted upwards in the event of a Canadian response.
Prior to the announcement of the 35 percent tariff, Trump expressed intentions to implement varying tariff rates for other countries, seemingly unfazed by concerns that such measures might destabilize the stock market or spur inflation.
In a statement, Trump noted, "We're just going to say all of the remaining countries are going to pay, whether it's 20 percent or 15 percent. We'll work that out now," underscoring a firm stance on trade.
He clarified that while not every trade partner would receive direct communication, countries such as members of the European Union and Canada would receive official notifications regarding the new tariff rates within a short timeframe.
In the broader context of these developments, the Trump administration has reached out to various trading partners in Asia, Africa, and Europe with a second wave of tariff-related correspondences.
In a related scenario, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has been vocal about seeking a diplomatic resolution to the US threat of imposing a hefty 50 percent tariff on Brazilian exports.
Lula, however, has made it clear that should these tariffs be enforced, Brazil will respond in kind. He remarked, "If they're going to charge us 50, we'll charge them 50," indicating Brazil's readiness to enact reciprocal measures.
This backdrop of tariff announcements and threats has amplified global uncertainty in trade, drawing various countries into complex negotiations as they explore strategies to counteract the implications of such U.S. policies.
