BUDAPEST, May 27 (Xinhua) -- The significance of the Chinese market to Hungary's tourism sector was emphasized by the head of Hungary's tourism authority in a recent interview with Xinhua. 'The Chinese market is very important to us, and we've invested significant resources into it,' he stated, underlining the growing relationship between the two nations.

During the 2025 Budapest China Tourism and Culture Week that commenced on Friday, Oliver Csendes, CEO of Visit Hungary, further articulated Hungary's strategic approach to attracting Chinese tourists. He noted that the country's campaigns not only highlight Hungary's rich cultural heritage but also feature prominent Hungarian figures who have a strong resonance with Chinese audiences.

The impact of these efforts is already evident; in 2024, Hungary welcomed over 183,000 Chinese tourists, a figure that nearly doubled the number from 2023, according to official data. This remarkable growth reflects a burgeoning interest in Hungary and its offerings among Chinese travelers.

'Tourism and travel are not only tools for peace but also part of cultural cooperation and exchange,' Csendes remarked, underscoring the broader significance of this tourism relationship.

Supporting this increase in visitation, there are currently 21 direct flights per week connecting Budapest with seven major Chinese cities. Csendes expressed confidence that these numbers will continue to rise, further bolstering Hungary's tourism landscape.

For 2025, Hungary anticipates a 67 percent increase in Chinese visitors compared to the previous year. To enhance the travel experience for these tourists, collaborative efforts are being made with major digital platforms like Trip.com and WeChat Pay.

Csendes revealed that he recently met with WeChat Pay's European head to discuss expanding its acceptance among Hungarian retailers. Additionally, Trip.com has launched a dedicated Hungary page in Chinese to cater to the needs of these travelers.

Beyond digital initiatives, Hungary has been proactive in offline engagement as well, having served as a guest of honor at the 2024 China International Fair for Investment & Trade. This year, the country has also welcomed official delegations from two Chinese provinces, indicating a commitment to strengthening bilateral ties.

Csendes highlighted the historical context of this relationship, noting that Hungary celebrated the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations with China last October. 'Our cooperation will continue to be very close,' he remarked, suggesting a promising future for Hungarian tourism fueled by Chinese interest.
