Xinhua: Tourism Boom Highlights Resilience of China's Economy

BEIJING, June 4 (Xinhua) -- The recent three-day Dragon Boat Festival break has highlighted the robust vitality and potential within China's tourism sector, which is progressively establishing itself as a strategic pillar of the world's second-largest economy.

During the holiday from May 31 to June 2, tourism expenditures soared to 42.73 billion yuan, approximately 5.95 billion U.S. dollars, marking a growth of 5.9 percent compared to the same period last year, according to official data.

In line with its high-quality development strategy, China aims to leverage its cultural and tourism sectors to drive economic growth. This approach seeks to stimulate consumption, create jobs, and enhance the economic structure by integrating tourism with various industries, thus generating new demand and innovative business models.

China has positioned itself as the largest domestic tourism market in the world and a significant source of international tourists, while also being a principal destination for global travelers.

The country's tourism potential is impressive, bolstered by its rich natural landscapes, historical sites, and cultural heritage, combined with a vast population. An extensive high-speed rail network and modern tourist facilities lay a strong foundation for sustainable growth, aligning with China's ambitions of becoming a leader in global tourism.

As China transitions toward a consumption-driven economy, tourism plays a crucial role in this shift. Authorities are emphasizing the importance of stimulating domestic demand through initiatives designed to enhance service quality, diversify tourist offerings, and unleash consumer spending in cultural and tourism sectors.

This year, various innovative policies have been introduced to invigorate tourism, including consumer incentives such as vouchers and discounts, alongside travel services tailored for different age groups. Emerging growth areas, including winter sports and senior-friendly travel experiences, have also seen significant developments.

The recent robust growth in tourism is evident from the data; in 2024, domestic travelers undertook 5.62 billion trips across China, an impressive 14.8 percent increase year on year, with their total travel expenditure reaching 5.8 trillion yuan, marking a 17.1 percent rise.

China's opening-up policy has played a significant role in boosting both inbound and outbound tourism. Last year, foreign tourist visits nearly doubled, reaching 26.94 million, sustaining robust growth this year, aided by a visa-free program for citizens of 43 countries. This influx of visitors not only stimulates consumption but fosters cultural exchange and enhances global understanding of China.

With growing international appeal and a rapidly expanding domestic traveler base, tourism is emerging as one of the most promising sectors in China. It significantly contributes to the economy and acts as a catalyst for broader consumer spending.

The World Travel & Tourism Council recognizes China as one of the most dynamic tourism markets globally, highlighting its strong post-pandemic recovery and promising long-term growth potential. Continuous investments in infrastructure, digital innovation, and destination development, along with increased visa-free access, are laying the groundwork for China to become a leader in modern, sustainable tourism.

The accomplishments of the tourism sector not only illustrate the resilience of China's economy but also reflect its status as a fast-growing major economy, serving as a vital engine for global economic expansion.
