Henan Province Unveils 16 New Air Cargo Routes to Boost Cross-Border E-Commerce

In a significant boost to its international trade capabilities, Central China's Henan Province has announced the launch of 16 new cross-border e-commerce freighter routes for 2025. These routes will connect Zhengzhou, the provincial capital, with key markets across Europe, North America, and Central Asia, as reported by Wang Jun, the deputy director-general of the Department of Commerce of Henan Province, on the local news portal dahe.cn.
The newly established air freight routes will include destinations such as Frankfurt, Paris, Budapest, Istanbul, Madrid, and others. This expansion not only aims to streamline cross-border e-commerce deliveries but also looks to strengthen the logistical links between Zhengzhou and other major European cities.
Analysts suggest that the expansion of these air cargo routes is poised to invigorate trade cooperation between China and the global market. This move parallels efforts in other Chinese regions to enhance their cross-border e-commerce networks, illustrating a nationwide trend in bolstering international trade infrastructures.
For example, recently, Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport introduced a direct cargo route to Tokyo, providing same-day delivery services for cross-border e-commerce goods. In another development, Nanning has acquired its first dedicated air cargo freighter, anticipated to start operations in June, which will facilitate direct trade connections with ASEAN countries.
These developments are part of China's broader strategy to increase air freight capacity for cross-border e-commerce. According to Pan Helin, a member of the Expert Committee for the Information and Communication Economy, this initiative is aimed at enabling faster and more efficient goods delivery, thereby supporting the growth of e-commerce businesses and enhancing trade with major global markets.
The success of cross-border e-commerce heavily relies on robust logistics networks. Hu Qimu, deputy secretary-general of the Digital-Real Economies Integration Forum 50, emphasized that a well-developed logistics infrastructure is essential for economies of scale, which adds resilience to e-commerce enterprises facing external risks.
Moreover, the advent of these new air cargo routes is expected to foster cooperation within airport economic zones, promoting synergy between bonded logistics, free trade zones, and related sectors, according to Pan.
Statistical data underscores Henan's burgeoning cross-border e-commerce landscape. In the first quarter of the year, the province's bonded logistics zone recorded cross-border e-commerce imports and exports totaling 8.12 billion yuan, equivalent to roughly 1.11 billion dollars, marking a remarkable year-on-year growth of 92.2 percent.
To further enhance its foreign trade and stabilize growth in commerce, Henan will host the 2025 Zhengzhou Cross-border E-commerce Conference from May 29 to 31, under the theme "Premium Products for Global Trade." This event aims to improve market access and establish an international platform for cross-border e-commerce collaboration.
Additionally, numerous trade fairs across China are expected to improve business engagement, concentrating efforts on advancing the cross-border e-commerce industry and exploring new international market opportunities for Chinese firms.
The e-commerce sector in China has exhibited steady growth, with official figures reporting online retail sales reaching 3.6 trillion yuan in the first quarter. Notably, online retail sales of goods saw an increase of 5.7 percent, while sales of digital products surged by 7.4 percent, as per Xinhua News Agency.
This momentum in e-commerce aligns with Henan's strategic initiative to fortify its position in the global market and respond effectively to the evolving demands of cross-border trade.
